The Department of Music at Virginia Tech is pleased to announce that the Virginia Tech String Project has again received funding through the National String Project Consortium and NAMM, the International Music Products Association. The project, initially funded in 2007, provides string instruction to elementary students as part of a program to recruit and train future string music educators.
Funding for the project allows the cost of lessons to be affordable for all income ranges and provides scholarships for needy students. Graduate and undergraduate teachers, under the supervision of Department of Music faculty, give small group and individualized instruction on violin, viola, cello, and string bass. In 2007, students from virtually every region of Montgomery County, Radford, and Floyd studied string instruments as part of the project. The year concluded with string orchestra concerts on the Virginia Tech campus and in selected elementary schools. Returning students will continue to receive instruction, as a new beginning class is started.
Virginia Tech String Project teachers will visit public and community elementary schools August 21- 29 to demonstrate instruments and recruit students for classes at Virginia Tech beginning September 9. A parent information and “instrument try out” meeting will be held September 4 at 7:00 p.m. in the Squires Recital Salon on the Virginia Tech campus. Classes will be offered for 3rd and 4th grade beginning students in the Virginia Tech Department of Music on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4:45. Call the Department of Music at 540 231 8496 or visit www.music.vt.edu/iutreach/strings for more information.
The Virginia Tech String Project is supported by the National String Project Consortium, NAMM, The School of Performing Arts and Cinema, The Department of Music, the New River Valley Friends of the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra, Corning Incorporated, Joe and Marie Paget, and Hing-Har Liu.
