| The Blacksburg Community Strings and Chamber Orchestra begin their 10th Anniversary Season--the 9th under the baton of Ake-Eric Renqvist--with a varied program featuring Blacksburg pianist Joetta Petersen playing Mozart's Piano Concerto in A Major, K488. Also on the program are Gustave Holst's "St. Paul's Suite" for string orchestra, Jean Sibelius' "Valse Triste," and Georges Bizet's "L'Arl?sienne Suite No. 2." "Gabriel's Oboe" by Ennio Morricone from the motion picture "The Mission," will feature oboe soloist Meredith McCree. Admission is free and open to the public.

Opera Roanoke, under the direction of maestro Steven White, presents Gustav Mahler's masterpiece, Das Lied von der Erde (Songs of the Earth). Performed in Arnold Schoenberg's ingenious transcription for chamber orchestra, the program will feature mezzo-soprano Nancy Maultsby and tenor Donald George in this expansive song-symphony that explores life, death and renewal in the context of nature. Also featured, the gilded splendor of George Frederick Handel's vocal music, with soprano Elizabeth Futral singing a collection of some of the great master's most beautiful and exciting opera arias. | |

| On December 6, 2008, pianists Nicholas Ross of Sweet Briar College and Emily Chua of Randolph College will present a program of piano music by Virginia Tech composer Kent Holliday in the Salon Recital Hall. Solo pieces composed over the past twenty years and the six movement suite "Hawaiiana" for piano four-hands will be performed. Nick Ross has played at the university several times before, including a performance with the New River Valley Symphony Orchestra. Emily Chua will be heard for the first time at Virginia Tech on the University Chamber Music Composers Concerts October 18 and 19 in addition to her performance here in December. The December 6th concert is open to the public and begins at 8:00 p.m. | |

The program will include a group of Aria Antiche, Robert Schumann's "Liederkreis," opus 24, Francis Poulenc's "Le Travail du Peintre" and selections from Gerald Finzi's "Earth and Air and Rain."
